"CKD represents one of the most dramatic examples of racial/ethnic disparities in health in our nation." African Americans are almost four times as likely as Whites to develop kidney failure. While African Americans make up about 13% of the population, they account for 35% of the people with kidney failure in the United States. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney failure among African Americans.
Through a sub-grant funded by Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Gulf Coast Apollo (TX) Chapter is one of fourteen chapters in the Western Area of The Links, Incorporated selected to participate in the Black K.A.R.E. Initiative. Through this initiative, we will partner with other community-based organizations to implement programming focused on increasing awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Black communities. Please contact us if you are interested in becoming one of our partners.
